PCC Joy Allen and Mary Kelly Foy, MP for City of Durham, have issued a joint statement following recent disorder in Durham City.

“We understand the violence and disorder that has taken place across the country is deeply disturbing.  We share the public’s horror at the events that have taken place across the North-East recently and concern at plans for further such gatherings.   We know that this does not reflect the views of the vast majority of law-abiding citizens.

“There is absolutely no justification for the violence, bias and damage that has been witnessed in our towns and cities.  This mindless thuggery threatens the solidarity and cohesion that we cherish so dearly, and it is vital we work together to eradicate the risks and reinforce unity and tolerance here in the North-East.

“Durham Constabulary has appropriate command structures in place to respond quickly to any disorder based on intelligence and is working closely with regionally policing colleagues.  Not only do we want to see peace and calm on our streets, but we want to see the people responsible for bringing fear and trepidation into our communities brought to justice.

“We would like to place on record our thanks and appreciation for everything our police force and other emergency services are doing to keep people and businesses safe.  The disgusting scenes we have seen caused untold damage in the affected communities with businesses ransacked and the livelihoods of local people torn from beneath their feet.

“The Durham we know is a tolerant, welcoming and open place, and we are proud of the diverse nature of the city and villages. Our communities do not want, or deserve, to witness these appalling scenes, so now is the time for us to come together and display the true values of our wonderful and inclusive communities.”
